Autistic Kids Are Magnets For Ghosts

I just read an interesting article from Psychology Today by Deborah Schurman-Kauflin Ph.D. and thought I would share with all of you.
Hope you enjoy, please give us your thoughts/opinions on the subject!
Cheers,
Nikki

Autistic Kids Are Magnets For Ghosts
      Deborah Schurman-Kauflin Ph.D.
Criminal profiler and expert on serial crimes

They are special, no doubt about that. They have their own ways of seeing the world and communicating. And though it can be trying at times, having an autistic child can make your heart grow. These children have so many gifts and can teach us patience. But they have other abilities as well. Autistic children are magnets for spirit activity.

If you have one of these special children, you may have noticed that things happen around your house. No, I’m not talking about the normal things in a child filled home. I’m talking about unusual things. Ghostly things. Things that go bump in the night.

It would appear as if unseen beings like autistic children. Because they process information and see the world differently, autistic children are more likely to see strange things. They often witness activities way before anyone else in the home. They are more sensitive to nuances, and they cannot lie. So when they look at the ceiling and react as if someone is talking to them, then you know you are dealing with truth. They really are seeing and hearing something. Naturally, you shouldn’t assume it is a ghost when such a thing happens. You must always consider the possibility of hallucination. Medications or mental illness certainly can have that effect. However, when others see and hear the same things, then you have to consider other possibilities.

Take Melissa for example. Melissa is a single mom to 12 year old autistic Daniel. From the time he was little, Daniel would look up at the ceiling and react to some invisible being. As he got older, Daniel would draw pictures of an old man in a cowboy hat and say things like ‘he here.’ He’d point to the picture, then at the ceiling. With time, Melissa became worried about her son’s mental health and took him to a neurologist who found nothing wrong but referred Daniel to a psychiatrist. Though Daniel showed no other signs of psychosis other than seemingly seeing something in the home, the psychiatrist said Daniel was psychotic. This was a real blow, and Melissa was devastated.

Yet, Daniel wasn’t the only family member to see the old cowboy. Even though Melissa hadn’t seen him, her mother had. And Daniel’s nine year old brother had seen and heard the man as well. It wasn’t until a neighbor saw the cowboy that Melissa began to believe there was more at work than a psychosis.

Living in Texas, it wasn’t a stretch that you might see an apparition of a cowboy. And Melissa began asking questions about the area where her family lived. She never did find out if anyone had died on the property, but after asking around, she found there were other people in the neighborhood who had had strange things happening in their homes too. They talked about things moving on their own. Doors slammed when the windows were closed. Melissa is convinced that her family has contact with the paranormal. She is very angry that her son was labeled as psychotic when he clearly was not. Since coming to terms with it, Melissa said the activity lessened.

Something went on in her home. Whether paranormal or not, her son saw something unusual before anyone else did. Was it his autism that allowed him to do so?

Another case involved Billie and her husband Ray. Billie and Ray were at their wit’s end when their autistic daughter claimed to see people who weren’t there. Naturally they were terrified of bringing her to a mental health professional for fear of having their daughter hit with a label. They took their concerns to their primary doctor who told them that it likely wasn’t schizophrenia and that they should not fear seeing a psychologist. Reluctantly they took Elle to a psychologist. Thankfully, this professional was not the type to jump to conclusions and didn’t find evidence of schizophrenia or psychosis. She did say that Elle was very imaginative and it was likely the product of an overactive imagination. Elle was given a clean bill of health, but the family was confused. Elle really believed what she saw. It seemed like more than just imagination.

Maybe it was their apartment, they thought. Maybe being there was too noisy. There was constant traffic and construction. Their lease was coming due anyway, so they decided to move. A change of scenery could help, they thought. But it seems that the spirit wanted to hitch a ride along with them because Elle didn’t let up in her behavior after the move, and neither did the spirit. In fact, now it wasn’t only Elle who experienced the vision of the Asian man. Billie began dreaming of him. Her husband Ray had the feeling of being touched when he was in bed. Things rearranged themselves in the home.

What was going on? Billie had a friend who knew someone who was psychic. After all the family had gone through, she figured she’d give that a shot. She asked if the psychic could help, and the psychic agreed to do remote viewing of the home. Without telling the woman anything, Billie was shocked when the psychic talked about an Asian man who had been killed in a robbery. She said the man was named Ron and had followed Elle home when he saw her. She said the man meant no harm. He simply wanted to be seen and heard. The psychic told Billie that if she spoke to Ron and told him that he was scaring them that he would go away. Reluctantly, Billie took an afternoon when everyone was out of the home and had a ‘talk’ with Ron. She told him he was scaring them and that they wanted him to leave. Billie reported that she heard a loud bang after she told Ron to leave. Was it the neighbors? She wasn’t sure. However, after her ‘talk,’ the activity in the home decreased. Though Ron didn’t leave, he did tone it down, enough that the family could deal with him being there.

Many, many people with Autistic children seem to experience the paranormal. In some cases it is simply a matter of a bad medicine reaction. Once the medication was changed, then the ‘ghost’ disappeared. However, there are other cases where family members see and hear things as well. If you have had this happen, then you should know you are not alone. It is not unusual. But this can add so much stress to an already stressful situation. How can a family cope with strange happenings on top of dealing with a special child? First and foremost, if you have this happening, take a deep breath before doing anything. Don’t jump to conclusions. If your child seems to be interacting with something that you cannot see, don’t automatically assume that it is paranormal. Always look for a physical or psychological cause for any unusual behavior. Check with doctors and check medicines. Always take care of your child’s physical and mental health
.
At the same time, if you have ruled out other options and more than one person in your home is having strange experiences, you may want to consider the possibility that something else is going on. There are so many wonders in this world, and we will never know everything. There are honest to goodness hauntings that do occur. Some can be explained; some cannot be explained. There are ghostly occurrences that may scare you, while others are helpful and comforting. Just know that your child is more special than you even knew! And if you are one of the parents living with a child who is different from others, please understand that you are special too. You must have a wonderful heart to have been given the chance to have a unique child.

New Year, New Adventures!

Well, it has been awhile since our last post, so sorry about that.  We have all had a busy season at home, taking a small break from investigating in order to recharge.  We have a lot of exciting things coming up, so please stay tuned.  I promise a lot more action here on the blog site.  On that note, I am going to start with tonight's fun! We are so excited!

Vancouver Paranormal Society (VPS) has invited our team along on an investigation at an historic location somewhere in the Fraser Valley.  Those who are brave enough (or just are able to), are welcomed to spend the night!  Sadly, I won't be one of those.  I have heard some stories about this location, heard of some interesting activity.  I can't wait to get myself and my recorders in there.  We at Northern Paranormal Investigations would like to thank VPS for having us out for this opportunity!

With this month rapidly coming to a close, we now turn towards February.  This month will be full of meetings with clients, our team's Annual General Meeting, and some potentially incredible investigation(s).  The coming month will also bring about the start of some great projects around the Lower Mainland, and later in the year even further out.

With that, I am off to make sure all my gear is ready for tonight.  If anyone has any "ghost stories" they would like to share, please email them to npi.bc.ca@gmail.com!  Some will be chosen to appear on our blog.  Thank you in advance of your stories!

Wishing you a fantastic weekend,

Spooky Photos!

Well, since Halloween is near, I thought it would be an appropriate time to share some photos I have seen around the 'web that give us that haunted spooky feeling when we see them.  Most of these are taken by "Urban Exploreres" and then edited to make them look even creepier/spookier/hauntier (yes I like to make words up).
Enjoy!

Armchair Paranormal Investigating

First an introduction. Hi, my name is Greg.  I have been a member of NPI for almost a year now and I will hopefully be updating the blog on a semi-regular basis.

Today's topic is armchair investigating.  No where near as fun or exhausting as the real thing but can be interesting nonetheless.  I have included below several sites that have set up webcams for the stay at home investigator.

First, from our neighbours to the south.

Furman Theatre, Greenville, South Carolina
The University was founded by Southern Carolina Baptist Convention in 1825
Moved to Greenville in 1851
I was unable to find the date when the theater was built.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Battle of Gettysburg - July 1-3 1863
A view from Seminary Ridge overlooking McPherson's woods where the first days of the Battle of Gettysburg occurred.

Willard Library, Evansville, Indiana
Built in 1877
Said to be haunted by a spirit known as "Lady in Grey"

Dollhouse Cam, Pennsylvania
Dolls and small children, what could be scarier

Next up the UK, where I think they invented hauntings

Ordsall Hall, Salford, UK
Built in the 15th Century
Said to be haunted by the White Lady.  This is believed to be the spirit of Margaret Radclyffe who died in 1599 of a broken heart, following the death at sea of her twin.

LLancaiach Fawr Manor, Treharris, Wales, UK
Built in 1530
Considered to be one of the top 10 haunted locations in the UK
Known for ghostly children and disembodied voices, one room is said to cause many visitors to burst into tears.

And lastly, for now, I am not sure where this particular webcam resides but it looks interesting.

The Legend of Lucy Keyes

The Legend of Lucy Keyes is a true story about a young girl who disappeared on Wachusett Mountain in 1755.

Lucy Keyes was a four-year old girl who was born in Princeton Massachusetts.  She lived on a farm on Wachusett Mountain with her mother Martha, her father Robert, and her two elder sisters.

On April 14th 1755, Lucy's mother was doing some spring cleaning and needed to scour the floors of their home.  The fine-grained sand on the shore of Wachusett Lake was used for this chore, and she sent her nine-year old daughter Anna and her seven-year old daughter Patty to collect the sand.  When the sisters left the house, little Lucy followed them into the woods and was never seen again.

Search parties were organized immediately to find the missing girl.  The woods were scoured, the lake was drained, but nobody could find any trace of Lucy Keyes. It was if she had vanished into thin air.  All they managed to find was a lock of blonde hair, next to a hollow log.

The local people eventually gave up the search when a neighbour, a man named Tilly Littlejohn, said that he had seen some indians lurking in the woods.  At that time, it was not uncommon for children to be kidnapped by indian tribes. Many people were convinced that the little girl had been abdicted by native americans and spirited away.

However, the mother never gave up hope and regularly roamed the woods at night, looking for her missing child.  Night after night, the desperate mother could be heard, making her way through the trees and calling out for her daughter.  Her father sold the farm and used the money to search for Lucy.

No one ever solved the mystery of what happened to Lucy Keyes.  No blood, tracks or clothing of the missing girl was ever found.  Overwhelmed by grief, Martha Keyes began to loose her sanity.  She died in 1786, never knowing what happened to her daughter.

After the deaths of Lucy's parents, a strange incident came to light.  A group of traders who were traveling in Canada came across an Indian tribe who had a white women with them.  The woman spoke no English and had no idea where she was born or how she came to be with the tribe.  The only English words she knew were "Chusetts Hill".

Years later Tilly Littlejohn, the neighbour who claimed he saw indians in the woods, was on his deathbed. He told his family that he had something to confess to before he died.  He said that years before, he had committed a terrible murder.

He had been involved in a disagreement with Robert Keyes over a property dispute.  He also resented the happiness of the Keyes family.  One day, he spotted Lucy wandering in the woods all alone.  Filled with anger and hatred, he grabbed the little girl and beat her head against a rock several times until she was dead.

Then, the evil man set about concealing her body.  He stuffed her into a hollow log and went home.  That evening, he joined a search party that was looking for her.  As they combed the woods, he became nervous and feared that they would stumble on the hollow log and discover Lucy's body.

That night, Littlejohn went out into the woods and dragged her body out of the log. He buried her in a hole and covered it with stones and dead leaves.  To shift attention away from himself, he invented a story about Lucy being taken by Indians.

Not long after his confession, Littlejohn died. He was never brought to justice for his crime.

Ever since then, it is believed that the ghosts of Lucy and her mother Martha, haunt Wachusett Mountain. Many people claim they have heard the voice of a women calling out, "Lucy!  Luuuuuuuucy!" as she wanders the mountain.  Once, after a fresh snowfall, a hunter came upon the tracks of a small child's bare footprints in the snow.

In 2006, the Lifetime Network made a movie about this ghost story called The Legend of Lucy Keyes.  The directors even reported strange noises, equipment malfunctions and abrupt weather changes while filming on location at the family's farm in Princeton, Massachusets.  Some say it was the spirit of Martha Keyes, making sure the family's story was correct.

News Update

Just to update everyone on a few things:
  • Northern Paranormal Investigations is now a TAPS Family Member.  We look forward to the new adventures, new friends, new ideas, etc. that this will bring.  Please feel free to check out the TAPS Family website here.
  •

  • NPI has been very busy with cases at historic locations throughout BC with more to come, and I look forward to sharing more detail as we are allowed.
  • The other weekend, I went along with Peter and another member from Vancouver Paranormal Society, also joined by Cathy from Edmonton Paranormal Society (both fellow TAPS Family Member Teams) to the Maritime Museum in Victoria. Vancouver Paranormal Society had set up a wonderful private investigation at this location and we are much appreciative for the invite. Many thanks to Christina at the museum for hosting us that night. It was of course, an epic night. And again, thank you Peter!
  • We are in the beginning stages of getting ready for COLDCON in November, so please keep an eye out for more information on that.
  • We are also in the beginning stages of some Halloween presentations we will be doing at an as-yet undisclosed location.  We will provide more information as soon as we can.
I think that covers most of it for now, if not...you shall see my typing soon enough.

Happy Haunts!

Historic Investigation - July 19, 2014

Well, getting all our gear ready for tonight's investigation.  This will be the first time this historic location is investigated for paranormal occurrences.  We might get nothing, or we might capture some pieces of history.

This location is large and the history behind it is so interesting.  At this time we can't share the details/location/history etc., but hope to be able to do so in a few months.

I purchased some new equipment recently and had great success with it at the last investigation I was at (will post about that one soon).  I can't wait to try it out again tonight, if the atmosphere allows it.  Sometimes, certain types of equipment just aren't able to be used in certain locations.  For example, if you investigation a location that has high EMF due to the make-up of the place (equipment, wiring, compounds etc), then an EMF meter/detector/trigger object/etc. will be completely useless and other equipment will need to be used instead.

I will also update in a couple days how our investigation went, even if nothing happens.  So stay tuned for that and other news/happenings/ramblings.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Road Trip Investigation!

Last weekend, we travelled to Kamloops for a very interesting investigation.  For now, the location is a secret but hopefully in time we will be allowed to share.

Kamloops welcomed us with open arms, and it was such a treasure to be there.  Of course, as soon as we arrived, it was off to Tranquille (and boy did we take the scenic route and almost end up in a movie!) Anyways, who goes to Kamloops looking for ghosts and doesn't stop there?  For those who do not know about Tranquille, here are a couple great sites to peruse:

Here is a site that has AMAZING photos:

Here are a couple photos I took while there (mobile phone, bad quality photos, etc etc)!   (the post continues after the photos)....

Anyways, after our walk down the road between Tranquille Sanatorium site and the river (always making sure we were in the areas allowed, never trespassing), we headed back to the hotel for some ghost talk amongst our team and guest investigators from Coldspotters (thanks Calvin, Amanda and Marlene for joining us).  Much fun was had, and it was time to rest up for our big day.

Next day. We wake, run around town exploring, get ready for the investigation, head to site and BOOM! Action starts. We set up our equipment, we do all our base readings and base photos.  We get the complete tour done.  We hear stories, experiences. We are......drawn in.

Time to start!   What the heck was that we saw on the DVR screen?  (DVR - Security cameras we have set up in various locations).  Wow...this is going to be an interesting night for sure.   We are super excited, curious and maybe a little apprehensive, but we set off on our first round of EVP sessions.

We ended up doing many EVP sessions, and after a lot of us having minor personal experiences I know that I at least am excited to delve into the  40+ hours of audio, video and photo to review.  Good times indeed, but if we can find something to take back to the Client, then it will have been more than worth it.  The experience was once in a life time, and while it was hard emotionally, if we can do something good and bring something to the Client then it was more than worth it.  This is why we do what we do.  I wish I could share more about it all, but for now, must remain silent due to confidentiality agreements.

If/when we are able to share anything we might have found EVP/Photo/Video-wise, we will.  We are also hoping to get back up to that area again sooner rather than later for more investigations in Kamloops, but we are so busy for the next....many many months, so hopefully we can return to Kamloops for multiple investigations next summer.

Hope everyone has a wonderful night, enjoy the full moon and a beautiful loving weekend.
